Hybrid Vigour: When Music, Art and documentary collide - Emotional, honest and absorbing... real life stories through the lens of artists. Documentary has never been so rewarding!

From last year’s Stories We Tell to the controversial The Act of Killing, the hybrid documentary is going from strength to convention-busting strength. But British documentary seems to be pushing the boundaries even further in challenging the genres of music, biography and archive film. Why is this and what does it tell us about the role of artists and musicians in documentary film making?
We joined the creative partnerships behind three recent festival hits for an exploration of what went into stretching the limits of the form, an insight into the unusual collaborations between director and subject, and a look at the questions these films pose about memory, truth and the creative process.

A fascinating discussion with some very creative partnerships. Moving in places, this was a thoroughly absorbing conversation - (Who would have believed we were sat in the O2...?)

Edwyn Collins was a trooper and showed he was still sharp and on a good route to recovery after his cerebral hemorrhage. The possibilities are endless is an amazing piece of documentory art.

Jarvis Cocker was a smash. A special commission as part of the 100 years of Stainless Steel celebrations, The Big Melt is a feature length elegy to the men and women who toiled in Sheffield's steelworks and a hymn to Britain's proud industrial past. Working with Sheffield's own musical hero Jarvis Cocker, acclaimed director Martin Wallace has woven an exquisite tapestry of steel industry-related archival footage drawn from the BFI National Archive. Jarvis also provides the film's stirring musical accompaniment, collaborating with a raft of Sheffield's finest musicians, including a string quartet, a brass band, members of Pulp, Richard Hawley, the Forgemasters and a youth choir.
Performed live at Sheffield's celebrated Crucible Theatre at Doc/Fest 2013.
