>JEREMY DELLER - JOY IN PEOPLE

Hayward Gallery, London
27 April 2012

Jeremy Deller - a hugely influential artist for much of the past two decades, this Turner Prize winner has helped to rewrite the rules of contemporary art. Acid House to the Iraq War, and every thing in between!

This brilliant exhibition incorporate almost all of Deller's major works to date, including installations, photographs, videos, posters, banners, performance works, and sound pieces, shown together with new work. We first saw Deller in Paris, at the uber cool Palais de Tokyo... great to see more of his genius here!

Social commentary and reenactments of sensitive black spots from our recent history feature heavily in this body of work. The Battle of Orgreave (above) is a moving rewind to the bleak days that surrounded the pit closures in Yorkshire... running battles between the miners and Police became common place, the reenactment opened old wounds and became one of Deller's best works.

Screams and panic are all you can imagine when you first see the mangled remains of a blown up car.  The burnt out husk is all that remains from a 2007 truck bomb attack on the Al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, the attack killed 38 people.
