Popeye - Oil on canvas 2003

Loads more Jeff Koons in London...Hurrah! ...and it's his first ever solo public gallery show in the UK! This exhibition is a combination of loans as well as some brand new pieces. Kitsch, bold, surreal and full of bizarre combinations of everyday objects, cartoon imagery, historical art references and kids toys, this is signature Koons – just the way we love it.

The wonderful sculptures on show continue Koons’s interest in casting inflatable toys. Kids swimming pool buoyancy aids are cast in aluminium, their surfaces painted to bear an uncanny resemblance to the original objects. Koons has used inflatables in his work since the late 1970s. He further develops his use of cast inflatables in the Popeye series by juxtaposing these replica 'ready-mades' with unaltered everyday objects, such as chairs or rubbish bins. The amazing paintings in the series are hyper-real, complex and layered compositions that combine disparate images both found and created, including images of the sculptures in the series.

Big, bright - bold and funny...these paintings and sculptures are feel good treats that can only leave you with a huge happy grin!
