Much more than just matchstick cats and dogs!
No visit to Manchester is complete without a trip to the Lowry! This spectacular multi-use cultural facility is not only home to a vast collection of Lowry masterpieces, it also boasts a theatre, bars, educational spaces and a really great shop!
Many of Lowry's great works are present! Iconic industrial landscapes, busy street scenes and everyday interiors.
The permanent collection also contains many surprises! Beautiful, vibrant portraits, bold sea scapes and wonderfully informal family compositions reminiscent of Munch. A real hi-light, and treat to find was this... 'Portrait of Ann - 1957' shown left, simple, stylish and equally as glamorous as any Lempicka.
The Lowry also has gallery space for a varied and ever changing selection of temporary exhibitions. During our visit we enjoyed these interesting shows:
- Dame Laura Knight's, works inspired by the Theatre
- Transformations 1: 'Giant Psychic Avatars of Salford' by International artists Simon Grennan (UK) and Chris Sperandio (USA)
- Greenhouse by Spacecadets, a really funky installation of huge inflatable plants, see pics below! ;-)
