9 - 13 July 2015
Alicante - Oh... today we are off to sunny Spain etc..!
Thursday 9th of July - Flew out from Southampton airport, 2 hour flight into Alicante. Checked into the wonderful La Milagrosa Hotel in the old town, in the square opposite the Basilica de Santa Maria. Went out exploring and had a tapas dinner in Calle San Fransisco.
Friday the 10th July - Sunny and hot all day. Up and out early after a light breakfast on the roof terrace of our hotel. Walked up to El corte Ingles and purchased Ibiza mix 2015 and beach towels. Walked down to explore the central indoor market on two levels. Then explored the Museum of contemporary art MOCA. Full of new art and Modern Spanish masterpieces. Walked along to top of raised level above the beach and had a coffee. Back to hotel, changed into beach gear and hit the sand. Chilled for a few hours and swam in the warm clear Med. Back to hotel for siesta. Then up and out to purchase tapas style snacks for the eve on our balcony. On the way we stop off at the museum of figures - a space dedicated to celebrating the craft behind the spectacular creations that get burnt during the festival of fire. Once back at the hotel we play cards and soak up the atmosphere from the square below our window.
Saturday 11th July - A slightly cloudy morn that soon turns sunny as we breakfast on the roof top terrace. Today we are heading south 25 mins. inland to the Palm town of Elche. We walk around the beautiful municipal, park then head to the priests garden. A beautiful oasis of tropical style planting. We head back after a couple of hours and hit the beach to relax in the sun. This eve we are on the look out for traditional tapas with a twist... We are not disappointed by our choice of restaurant. The XXX comes highly recommended and we enjoy a selection of 3 dishes. Amazing sea cucumber, a platter of local cheeses and a salad of local tomatoes and the creamiest mozzarella... All washed down with a few glasses of local red vino.
Sunday 12th July - A wonderful sunny morning awaits... We are up early and take advantage of being able to enjoy a swim... What a great way to start the day. After breakfast up on the roof we head out to explore the park below the castle. We find pretty old streets that soon take you back down to the busier main streets of the city. We head back towards the port and visits the Mubag gallery and the collection of local landscapes and portraits. The heat is overpowering today so we head back to the hotel to relax before hitting the beach for a refreshing swim. In the evening we meet up with Mark and Natasha who are also taking a break in the City. We have a drink in the square outside our hotel and then head up to the terrace overlooking the beach to enjoy a bottle of cold rose wine. We head back to the hotel for a tapas style dinner in our room.
Monday 13th July - Time to pack our holiday things away and head home. We take an early morning dip in the Med as the sun rises. A quick breakfast on the roof then off to catch bus to airport. Looking forward to arriving at a rather damp and grey Gatwick... Then off to meet Jenny.
