Prague - Steeped in history and rich with culture, it's a City with plenty of enduring Gothic spectacle... it delivers on every level... or does it?
The City of Prague has been on our 'to do' list for many years. We both really enjoyed our stay and the City is beautiful, vibrant and interesting. But... we did feel it was over commercialised and geared heavily towards making money from tourists (obviously)... much to the detriment of an authentic and memorable experience.
Friday 30th January - Flew from Heathrow to Prague. Bus into Prague from airport. Checked in at the Cloister Inn Hotel. Went out exploring... Walked around local area and down to Charles Bridge. Then meal in local Pub... Rustic food... Giant Pork knuckle and fried trout.
Saturday 31st January - Up and out early. Walked around city in snow shower. Walked up to Wenceslas Square and enjoyed view from the historic Powder Tower. We then visit the house of the golden bell Gallery on the main square. Walked around the Jewish quarter then went into the Galerie Rudolfinum. Crossed river to climb hill up to the palace up Main Street and stopped off at the Loreto. Walked down Novt Svet and got to Central complex and went in St. Vitus Cathedral within Prague castle. Then came back down to river crossed Charles Bridge and had wine and snacks in tempo Allegro. Back to hotel for rest. Then off out again for a drink in local bar and then dinner at School Restaurant and lounge (very nice).
Sunday 1st February - Up and out, cold and bright. First stop, the Jewish quarter to visit the Pinkas synagogue, grave yard, the ceremonial hall and Spanish synagogue. Then walked over river to find tram line to the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art. Purchased tickets and travelled on tram number 12. Great art and tight security around the exhibition containing magazine covers from the Charlie Hebdo publication. Back to Central Prague to look in the Church of St James. Walked about a bit and came back to hotel. Had a rest then out again to get sun set. Walked over bridge and passed the sculpture gallery. Then back to hotel, cards, then out for Italian meal. Mini bottle of wine back at hotel. Good night.
