>HEDDA GABLER

The Old Vic, London

Hedda Gabler - A masterpiece. A theatrical gem. Sheridan Smith vamps it up as the cool ice queen in this tense thriller. Peppered with humour, Hedda Gabler is a production that will haunt you for quite a while!

Hedda Gabler
is a play first published in 1890 by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The play premiered in 1891 in Germany to negative reviews, but has subsequently gained recognition as a classic of realism, nineteenth century theatre, and world drama. Anna Mackmin returns to The Old Vic to direct Olivier Award-Winner Sheridan Smith in this major new production of Ibsen’s masterpiece.

This play looks sweet from the outside, but soon becomes dark and sour. Sheridan Smith stays cool and her portrayal of Hedda is icy and manipulative. The wonderful supporting cast keep up well too. Darrell D'Silva plays a brilliant randy old Judge, and Anna Reid is very good as Aunt Ju-Ju... nearly as good as Jean, her character from Dinnerladies!
