>YAYOI KUSAMA

Tate Modern, London
4 March 2012

Yayoi Kusama - managing madness and sharing nine decades worth of personal creativity. Painting, drawing, sculpture, film, performance and immersive installation allow a walk through the mind of a genius. A retrospective worth it's weight in gold.

A beautiful and moving show from Tate Modern. This could quite easily have become a comedy polka-dot heavy mess of a show... but instead, the real Yayoi Kusama has been allowed to glow in every room. This is a highly personal and very special collection of work. Early painting and drawings help to build the viewers expectation of things to come as the momentum of the layout gathers pace, colour and energy. The infinity rooms are spectacular... UV lighting and fluorescent dots play havoc in a black room filled with black furniture. The latest version of the Infinity Mirror Room, and the largest to date, can be found at the Tate Modern’s retrospective exhibition of Yayoi Kusama’s work in London. The installation is a space, measuring 3000 x 6175 x 6455 mm, made of mirrors, plastic, acrylic and hundreds of hanging color-changing LED lights.

The mirrored room creates a sense of infinite space and as you enter it and walk along its corridor you get a feeling that you are actually floating in space. The pulsating low-energy LEDs completely surround the visitor and multiply to infinity in an awe-inspiring sight. A perfect marriage of technology and creativity.
