What better way to soak up those last few summer rays than to take a quick trip to the seaside City of Malaga? Sun, sombreros and the birth place of Picasso... Smashing!
We have just returned from a late break in wonderful Andalusia. Malaga is a compact City with a busy port, fine beaches and a very traditional Spanish atmosphere... not quite what you would expect from this 'Brit-hot-spot' - but a very pleasant surprise none the less! Málaga is also a very deserving candidate for the title of '2016 European Capital of Culture'.. ole!
This is how we spent our few days away!:
Saturday 3rd Oct - we have lift-off! 8am Easy jet flight from Gatwick to Malaga. Touch down around 11.15am Spanish time, whizz through passport control and off to Malaga central on the train. 20 Min's through the outskirts and we arrive in the City. A 10 min walk to the delightful Room Mate Lola Hotel and we are nearly ready to explore... Unpack, swimming shorts on and we are off! A stroll through the old town via the wonderfully cool "Passeo del Parque" leads us to the coastal area - we hit the beach and jump in the Med (brrr... bit chilly)... quick splash around and a few moments sun bathing and we are off back to the Hotel. Get changed for a fun eve of meandering and Tapas trekking.. very rewarding it was too!
Sunday 4th Oct - A lovely hot sunny day to explore. We wonder through the back streets and find beautiful old churches, busy squares and many sights of re-development. As it is still early we visit the Museum Picasso Malaga before the crowds strike! This is a brilliant collection of personal drawings, sculptures and larger full colour works - all housed in the beautifully restored 16th century Palacio de Buenavista. The amazing outdoor coffee garden and foundations in the basement are also worth checking out! Next stop the Roman amphitheatre on Calle Alcazabilla - we sit on the ancient stone seats and soak up the atmosphere. Off again through the narrow streets and a chance to peruse the smaller local galleries and shops! Enough sightseeing for one day and we decide to take advantage of a quick Siesta before heading out to enjoy an evening in the Old Town. We sip Sherry in the square outside the magnificently over-the-top Baroque splendor of the Cathedrale la Encarnación (This really has to be one of the most spectacular Cathedral's in the world!)... Tapas is much needed so we pig out at Los Dos Gatos! A purrrrfect way to round of the day!
More to come!
