...With its airy galleries, glass stairwells and walkways, its long views through rooms of all sizes, it's one of the most beautiful art spaces in London!
On October the 9th the third incarnation of the Saatchi Gallery flung open its doors. Now housed at the Duke of York's headquarters, just off London's King's Road, the 70,000sq ft gallery took three years and a small fortune to complete. The first major exhibition is devoted to Chinese art - with all pieces being drawn from Saatchi's vast collection of contemporary works. The show features paintings, sculptures and installations from 30 of China's leading artists and is spread over three levels. Some pieces are more worthy than others, and in typical Saatchy style, be prepared for some 'shocking' experiences!!! The show runs until January the 18th '09 - don't miss it!
Pic above shows 'Old Persons Home' by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. 13 life size automated wheelchairs judder about aimlessly. Each one contains a slumped ultra-realistic, geriatric world leader... The Gallery states - "They are a grizzly parody of the UN dead"...!!!...
The Saatchi Gallery contains a study centre and is also home to the on line Gallery. A fab bookshop and selection of gifts are housed on the lower level. All shows are free to enter and membership is available. Great!... My other favourite pieces from this show are illustrated below.
